The POSTGAME Readiness Index (PRI) is a structured, athlete-friendly assessment that measures how prepared student-athletes are for life after sport—academically, professionally, personally, and emotionally.

Designed to be brief and easy to complete, the PRI provides athletic departments with a quantifiable snapshot of readiness while identifying gaps that can be addressed through programming, advising, mentorship, and targeted support services.

Built to integrate seamlessly into existing academic, athletic, and compliance workflows, the PRI helps institutions better prepare student-athletes for success beyond graduation.

Why Schools Need It

Today’s athletic departments are being asked to do more than win games.

NCAA expectations have expanded to include holistic student-athlete development, requiring schools to demonstrate meaningful support in areas such as:

  • Career readiness & life after sport preparation

  • Academic progress & degree completion

  • Mental health, well-being, and personal development

  • Leadership, responsibility, and transferable skills

  • Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) awareness and decision-making

  • Transition support for graduation or transfer

The PRI gives schools measurable, data-driven insights to support these priorities.

How the PRI Helps Athletic

Departments

The PRI enables institutions to:

  • Demonstrate alignment with NCAA expectations

  • Provide evidence-based support for student-athlete development

  • Measure outcomes tied to graduation and post-sport transition success

  • Identify at-risk athletes who need targeted intervention

  • Strengthen advising, mentoring, and support programming

  • Track progress over time through a repeatable assessment model

What the POSTGAME Readiness

Index Measures

The POSTGAME Readiness Index (PRI) evaluates student-athlete preparedness across four core domains that directly reflect modern NCAA graduation-readiness and holistic development priorities.

Each domain contains five targeted questions, scored on a 1–5 scale, for a total possible score of 100 points. Results provide schools with both a high-level readiness snapshot and actionable insights for intervention, advising, and development.

1. Identity, Direction & Purpose

Do athletes know who they are beyond sport?

This domain measures whether student-athletes have developed a stable identity outside athletics and possess clarity about their future path.

It evaluates:

  • Identity beyond athletics

  • Future vision and direction

  • Awareness of strengths and transferable abilities

  • Confidence in non-athletic environments

  • A defined post-graduation plan (career, college, trade, military, entrepreneurship, etc.)

High Score: Strong self-awareness, confidence, and direction
Low Score: Identity foreclosure, uncertainty, lack of planning

2. Academic, Career & Professional Readiness

Are they prepared for what comes next?

This domain assesses whether athletes understand academic requirements, career pathways, and the professional behaviors needed for long-term success.

It evaluates:

  • Academic and career alignment

  • Knowledge of next-step requirements (applications, credits, certifications, testing)

  • Communication skills with adults, mentors, employers, and advisors

  • Leadership, internship, or experiential readiness

  • Awareness and use of campus resources

High Score: Organized, proactive, career-aware
Low Score: Unclear pathways, missed requirements, disengagement

3. Life Skills, Well-Being & Personal Management

Can they function independently?

This domain measures the practical life skills student-athletes need to thrive outside structured athletic systems.

It evaluates:

  • Time management

  • Financial literacy and budgeting basics

  • Healthy physical and mental habits

  • Help-seeking behavior

  • Support systems beyond teammates and coaches

High Score: Independent, responsible, resilient
Low Score: Risk of overwhelm, poor habits, lack of support

4. Transition Confidence & Long-Term Readiness

Are they emotionally ready for life after athletics?

This domain captures emotional preparedness, adaptability, and confidence entering the next chapter of life.

It evaluates:

  • Transition preparedness after graduation or sport completion

  • Awareness of transferable skills gained through athletics

  • Ownership and accountability

  • Adaptability in new environments

  • Active preparation toward future goals

High Score: Emotionally ready, proactive, confident
Low Score: Anxiety, avoidance, lack of confidence or direction

Why It Matters

The PRI does more than generate scores—it reveals where athletes are thriving, where support is needed, and how schools can better guide student-athletes toward successful transitions beyond the game.

Scoring Snapshot: What the Total Score Represents (0–100 Scale)

The POSTGAME Readiness Index provides an overall readiness score from 0–100, helping schools quickly identify where student-athletes stand and what level of support may be needed.

80–100 | High Readiness

Athlete is confident, prepared, and actively planning for life after sport.
Minimal intervention needed.

60–79 | Moderate Readiness

Athlete demonstrates strengths but also has noticeable gaps in planning, confidence, or preparedness.
Targeted support recommended.

40–59 | At Risk

Athlete lacks clarity, skills, or support in multiple readiness areas.
Structured intervention recommended.

0–39 | High Risk / Immediate Support Needed

Athlete appears significantly unprepared for graduation or transition beyond athletics.
Immediate support strongly recommended.

Why Athletic Departments Love It

  • Quick to administer

  • Easy reporting

  • Identifies athletes needing support

  • NCAA-aligned framework
